The weather in Tashkent is generally hot, with temeperatures in summer (July until the end of August) reaching up to 40°C (104°F), and averaging 32°C. In winter (January to February), daytime temperatures hover around 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F). Most rainfall occurs in March and April.
The best time to visit Tashkent is during spring (May until the end of June), and Autumn (September to November), when the weather is generally mild and pleasant.
Nestled in the Chirchik River Valley and situated in the northwest parts of Uzbekistan, Tashkent is one of Central Asia's largest and most ancient cities. The metropolis is located immediately to the west of the Ferghana Valley, on the banks of the Zarafshan River, at about 440 to 480 metres above sea level.
Tashkent is ringed in the northeast by the snow topped ranges of the Chimiyon Mountains and the towering cliff tops of the Tian Shan Mountains, which are clearly visible. The Chirchik River, the Bozsuv, Ankhor, Korasuv, Salar, Burjar, Okkurghon, Korakamish and Oktepa canals traverse the city and have an indelible effect on the climate as well as the topography of Tashkent.
Tashkent's climate encompasses hot summers and severe winters. Winter consists of light to heavy snowfalls; temperatures may range between -20C and -400C. Summers, however, are long and dry with soaring temperatures that often reach as high as 400C. With the average annual rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 mm, the country is largely arid and dry. Most precipitation occurs in the months of winter and spring, while the period between July and September is dry, with less vegetation.
The best time to visit Tashkent is during spring (April or even mid March to early June) and in autumn (September to November) as the weather is pleasant. For avid trekking enthusiasts, July and August are the best months. Winters are severe and not conducive to travel.
An important cautionary note for tourists is that Tashkent is subject to significant seismic activity that affects most of the country. In fact, Tashkent was almost completely destroyed in the quake of 1966. Situated as it is amidst mountainous terrain, Tashkent is prey to tremors and has witnessed a number of earthquakes in the past.
